Siatica, sciatica! Not only is sciatica a pain in the bum when you’ve got it it’s also a pain in the butt to write about or right about! This article is a short piece on the many different spellings of sciatica I see. It must be especially difficult for speakers of English as a second language. To spell it out phonetically and help with how it sounds here are some tips:

1. Sighateca. Sigh – at – e – ca. The word sigh has a silent g (which means you do not pronounce it). Sigh as in sign but without the n sound at the end.

• Sciateca. Sci – at – e – ca. The word sci is as in science or sci fi

Or

• Siatika. Si – at – e – ka

Or

• Syatica. Si – at – ee – ca

To be clear then the correct spelling is sciatica. The above 4 examples are incorrect spellings that may help you with how to pronounce it.

When doing research for this article I stumbled on the google translate feature and had a little play around with how sciatica is spelt in different languages. It’s quite interesting to see how different countries spell it.

• Ciatico – Portuguese (feminine)

Hey this is a good idea! I’ll translate the English phrase of “I need help for my sciatica please” as a useful holiday phrase to know to use in chemists and pharmacies etc. All travel and phrase books should have it as an emergency phrase as in “where is the nearest police station”? Haha.

English “I need help for my sciatica please”.

French: “J’ai besoin d’aide pour ma sciatique s’il te plait”.

Italian: “Ho bisogno di aiuto per la mia sciatica, per favore”.

German: “Ich brauche Hilfe für mein Ischias bitte”.

Spanish: “Necesito ayuda para mi ciática por favor”.

American: “I need something for this godamn sciatica man”!
