bottom pain when sitting

Bottom pain when sitting? Use cushions.

Bottom pain when sitting is one of the main issues a lot of sciatica sufferers encounter – the inability to get into a comfortable position while sitting, driving, lying or sleeping. This inability to find an agreeable body position can cause issues around posture, pressure points, alignment and support. These issues in turn may then affect the joints, muscles and nerves associated with sciatica and can result in aggravating your condition as you add to your pain spiral! (See my blog “Why does my sciatic nerve hurt”?)

How can the right cushion help with sciatica?

Many cushions will be especially shaped to provide specific help such as providing lumbar support, promote correct spinal alignment, relieve pressure, general comfort and pain reduction. They can be used during the day while working at a desk or driving and also at night during sleep.

What types of sciatica cushions are there?

There are many different types of cushions including:

  • Wedge Cushions. Normally supplied in a set of two in different sizes, they can be manoeuvred to create a comfortable position for your back, legs and neck. Also available for sitting on to allow the hips to be above the knees which helps with muscle aches.
  • Knee Cushions. Designed to slightly separate the knees when lying or sleeping on your side to promote correct spine alignment.
  • Coccyx or Tailbone Cushion. Made to relieve pressure when sitting and generally have a hole or gap in the cushion to allow this.
  • Lumbar Cushions. Help support the lower back and encourage the correct “S” curvature of the lower spine (lumbar region) when sitting down.
  • Foot Cushions. Designed to allow more comfortable placement of feet when sitting at a desk. Particularly useful if your feet don’t reach the floor when sitting at an office desk for instance.

Along with the different types of cushions they also come in different materials including gel filled and memory foam with lots of different covers which are usually washable and also hypoallergenic.
