Can sciatica be cured

Can sciatica be cured?

The answer to “can sciatica be cured?” depends on two things as far as I’m concerned – do you have acute or chronic sciatica? And also, what do you mean by “can sciatica be cured”? If you have acute sciatica then yes sciatica can be cured easily with a little time, a few physio exercises, heat and ice treatments along with over-the-counter medication such as ibuprofen and paracetamol.

If you have chronic sciatica then things get a bit more complicated. It’s doubtful any one thing is going to cure chronic sciatica. You’re going to need a range of remedies and treatments, approaches, exercises and coping mechanisms.

So what do you mean by “can sciatica be cured”? If you mean zero pain ever again and no more flare ups then the answer is probably no. If you mean cured as in “can I get to a situation where sciatica is no longer causing me issues in my day-to-day life”? then yes, it is possible to live a virtually pain free life. I should know, I’m an ex chronic sciatica sufferer with 7 long years of agonising pain under my belt doing exactly that. If you didn’t read my story on the home page then you can check it out here Sciatica Help.

How can chronic sciatica be cured?

If you check out these sciatica remedies and treatments you’ll see dozens and dozens of ways of reducing your sciatica. Along with the medication drug amitriptyline I tried:

Between these numerous approaches I gained enough of an improvement to begin to manage my pain, leading to a situation where sciatica no longer plays a major part in my life.

How small changes can help cure your sciatica.

On the sciatica remedies page I refer to the British Cycling team and how they made dramatic overall improvements by making lots of small changes (read it here). In a similar way lots of small changes can help you with your sciatica.

Let’s suppose you start using a TENS machine and this improves your pain by 5%. This pain reduction then causes a 5% decrease in your nerve irritation. So, on its own that’s no great improvement! But add in a few daily stretches and that helps another 8%. Throw in a few physio exercises every other day and that helps another 7%. With all these little improvements you’re now able to go for a walk every day and this helps another 10%. All of a sudden your sciatica pain is much less which enables more improvement as your pain, inflammation and irritation now enters a pain spiral decrease! Less pain means less inflammation means less irritation means less pain and so on.

Sciatic pain can be reduced.

If you’re stuck in pain, if you feel nothing can help, you believe you’ll always have sciatic pain then I’d like you to visit the sciatica treatments page and commit to try at least two new things. It might be to use an ice or heat gel every day, commit to a daily stretching regime or purchase a posture aide. Can chronic sciatica be cured completely with just a few daily changes? Unlikely. But maybe just a little, week by week, a small improvement here, a tiny bit better there, a little recovery in movement, a change for the better in your joints, an upswing in your sleep quality. After a few weeks add in another couple of remedies and treatments and see another boost and so on.

“When told by my GP that nothing could be done for my sciatica I doubted anything would ever help. I now lead a pain free life”!
