pins and needles in foot sciatica

Pins and needles in foot, sciatica could be the cause. These supplements can help.

If you have pins and needles in your foot, sciatica could be the cause. There are many supplements for sciatica that can provide some helpful benefits mainly around inflammation, pain reduction, joint care, nerve function and general wellbeing.

Do I need supplements?

Most people who eat a varied diet will normally be getting enough of the vitamins, minerals and general nutrition they need for their day to day bodily functions and systems to work properly. We used to have an RDA which stood for Recommended Daily Allowance, this has been replaced with an NRV, meaning Nutrient Reference Value. RDA and NRV mean exactly the same thing and just refer to the recommended amounts of certain vitamins that we should consume daily. As I said most of our needs are taken care of if we eat a varied and balanced diet. Issues can sometimes arise though if we don’t have a healthy diet, are ill or have certain allergies which prevent us from eating certain foods, oily fish for example.

Supplements can help us to hit our NRV (daily need), most packaging on supplements will give a percentage of the amount of NRV each dose provides i.e. 1 tablet provides 100% of NRV. It’s important to review your diet to judge whether you are receiving the correct amount of nutrients required. Don’t think more is better! Taking some supplements to excess can cause illnesses just as much as not taking enough. For instance, be careful taking lots of anti-inflammatories as a supplement or as part of your diet if you are already taking anti-inflammatory medication. There’s some great advice here on the NHS website

Important things to consider.

Before you start taking any supplements please be aware:

  • If you eat a varied healthy diet you are probably getting enough nutrients and vitamins – a vitamin D supplement is sometimes recommended by the NHS particularly in winter months.
  • Review your diet to see if you may be lacking in certain nutrients. If you eat lots of junk food or are vegan you may need a boost.
  • Speak to your GP before starting to take any supplements particularly if you are pregnant or breast feeding, have a medical condition or take other medication.

Will taking supplements really make a difference?

Did you read about little changes making big differences on the sciatica remedies page? If not you can quickly go to it here. It’s doubtful any one thing will cure your sciatica. Lots of little improvements can get you out of your pain spiral though – nerve irritation = inflammation = pain = more irritation and so on. So let’s imagine by taking Turmeric you get 3% less inflammation, causing 3% less pain. OK so no big deal on it’s own but add in daily stretches and that helps another 6%. Using ice gels helps another 5%. Changes to your posture brings another 7% improvement to your pain. With all these little improvements you’re now able to do a bit more exercise which brings more relief. Before you know it your pain is down by nearly a third and you’re well on your way to managing your sciatica.
