treating sciatica at home

Treating sciatica at home. Sciatica remedies and treatments.

Treating sciatica at home can be easy and very effective. Some of the remedies below may prove more effective than others depending on your level of pain and discomfort. Often though it’s not only a case of what works best but what you have with you and the situation you’re in at the time. Saying put ice on it is no good if you’re driving down the M1 at 70mph!

What are the best home sciatica remedies for me?

Not knowing your individual circumstances it’s hard to recommend any one particular thing. It also depends on what you’ve tried before and willing to try in the future. To some people the gym would be a no no, to others surgery would only be considered as a last resort. Many sciatica sufferers recommend heat to stimulate recovery and blood flow to a particular area, I often found heat a source of irritation rather than a help. It really depends on the individual.

If you’ve already tried some of the remedies below then maybe move on to looking at something new. Be sure to check out the recommendations under each category though as technology and innovation are constantly happening. There’s always advances in medical procedures and things like height adjustable desks, affordable and portable shockwave machines, hybrid mattresses and CBD are all relatively recent developments.

Remember sciatica pain can be reduced. Naturally.

Hopefully you read my story on the home page so you’ll know I now lead a pain free life. If you didn’t see it or managed to get through it all here’s a recap. I suffered with sciatica for over 7 years. At one stage I’d resigned myself to a life of constant sciatic pain and discomfort. More through luck than judgement I stumbled across an article on CBD and pain relief and was willing to give it a try. I’ve now been pain free for over 10 months.

You’ve most probably landed on this website to help find some relief from your sciatica or back pain. You may have given up hope on ever finding a remedy. Please realise that as long as there are things you haven’t tried yet then it’s possible to find ways of managing your pain and even living a pain free life.

How small gains can have a dramatic effect on curing your sciatica.

If you know about the sport of cycling you’ll be aware of the tremendous improvement seen to British cycling over the past several years. In Beijing in 2008, 2012 in London and Rio in 2016 team GB won 22 cycling gold medals. Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas between them won 6 Tour De France trophies in 7 years. A lot of this success was attributed to Sir Dave Brailsford who was the performance coach at British cycling.

One of Brailsford’s techniques was to breakdown every single element of cycle racing, every factor contributing to athletic performance, every contribution to running a successful sports team and see if it could be improved, no matter how little. Some examples included coaching the athletes on proper hand washing, so minimising the number of days athletes got ill with bad stomachs and missed training. Making sure bikes were transported or stored in a dust free environment. This stopped any dust particles entering precision cogs and gears etc and so interfering with the performance of the bikes. Even the riders own bedding and mattresses were transported from hotel to hotel to ensure a good nights sleep! All these little changes were enough to catapult British cyclists from being a laughing stock in elite sports cycling to world champions.

I went from pain level 8/10 to 4/10 down to zero!

On the homepage you can read how I went from agonising pain to pain free in several stages. It wasn’t just one thing, I tried ice, heat, a new mattress, physio, acupuncture, stretches, prescription meds etc. And although none of them (other than CBD) made a big difference I believe each thing had a small extra incremental effect so I could begin to get on top of managing my sciatica pain – eventually leading to its cure.

It felt like I was in some sort of pain spiral (see my blog “Why does my sciatic nerve hurt“?). The wear and tear on my spine was causing irritation to my sciatic nerve, this was causing pain, which was causing inflammation, causing more irritation, causing more pain, causing more inflammation and so on. I couldn’t get out of this pain spiral until I tried new remedies, new remedies that enabled the reduction – just a little, of the irritation, that led to a small reduction in the pain, causing a slight reduction of the inflammation leading to even less irritation meaning less pain and so on. With lots of little improvements you too can start to manage your own sciatic pain.
